Global mining giant Rio Tinto and the University of Western Australia (BHERT member) have commenced a major research collaboration to run over the next four years in support of mineral exploration. UWA’s Geodata Algorithms Team will apply their expertise to data analytics and data mining research projects including automated 3D geological modelling. The partners have worked together for the last seven years, with the Geodata Algorithm team winning the UWA Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Impact and Innovation in 2015. The new partnership (Data Fusion Projects) is a $3.6 million investment in 3D geological modelling and image analysis. “The Data Fusion Projects will maximise the value of our collected data, and increase the importance of multi-disciplinary training for the future of the industry,” says Professor Holden, leading the UWA team. The UWA team has developed a particularly strong relationship with Rio Tinto’s Iron Ore activities.
